Chapter Nine is the 9th episode of CW dramedy Jane the Virgin.
Synopsis
SINGER/ACTRESS PAULINA RUBIO GUEST STARS — Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) are both concerned about Petra’s (Yael Grobglas) true intentions with the baby, especially after they discover one of her shocking secrets. Rogelio (Jaime Camil) is nominated again for a Best Actor award and invites Jane, Alba (Ivonne Coll) and Xo (Andrea Navedo) to attend the show with him. Xo is about to give up on her dreams, but when she meets her ultimate idol, Paulina Rubio, she has a change of heart. Meanwhile, Michael (Brett Dier) unveils a huge clue in his ongoing investigation.
Recap
She is excited! But her mom has bigger plans today- she is meeting with a record executive! Jane has a doctor's appointment and she and Rafael take the bus . It his apparently his first time on public transportation and while they ride Jane anxiously is looking on WebMD to read up on her appointment. He asks is they are "back on" and Jane replies they are taking it slow. As part of their "get to know you" game she tells him that she is going to be published- but she is not going to let them because the story is loosely based on her mother.
Switch over to Rogelio who is doing an interview for the upcoming Paloma Awards. He is nominated for the second year in a row for his role as Santos. Here we meet his nemesis Esteban Santiago who is also a huge telenovela star (his fiercest rival).
Back to the Villanueva house, Xo was praying to her own god: Paulina Rubio. Paulina tells her that today is the day- but she should switch shoes.
Michael and Nadine are worried about their lost Serbian. On one hand if they don't report it to their bosses, they get huge credit for a big bust. On the other hand, they lost a war criminal and this could go very badly for them. Then Michael tells Nadine his theory that Sin Rostro is Rafael. Nadine thinks he's crazy for his "Rafael vendetta".
At the doctor's office, Jane is getting her 13 week scan (she apparently checked WebMD in the bathroom). She tries to get information out of the technician but the tech cannot give results- only a doctor. Jane asks Rafael if he believes in God and they talk about her being Catholic. And then they argue about public schools and Sunday School. That doesn't matter when they learn their baby is the size of a peach- and they are so happy...until Petra bursts in claiming that Jane is her surrogate!
They discuss their options to get rid of Petra's claim on the baby and Rafael wants to pay her off. Jane argues that she doesn't deserve the money.
Rogelio shows up at the Villanueva house and invites Xo (and the rest of the family) to the Paloma Awards. He hugs Xo for good luck and she goes to her meeting.
Back in captivity, Ivan gets an idea from his favorite show, The Passions of Santos while Petra and Magda leave him alone. Downstairs Billy Cordero is now working at The Marbella and is taking bets on who will win at the Poloma Awards. Michael shows up and asks for a favor looking for proof that Rafael is Sin Rostro.
Back from her meeting, it did not go well for Xo. They said she was too old. Disheartened, she decides to grow her dance classes and looks for studio space- but instead finds Jane's story "about" her.
At the hotel, Rafael's lawyer is showing them footage of Petra on TV stating that she is going after custody of the baby. Jane, upset about the situation sees Michael downstairs. He offers to help.
Ivan sees his opportunity to escape as long as Santos shows him the way.
Later Jane tells Rafael about her plan to wear a wire to get info on Zaz's murder from Petra, and use that to record her plans to get money from Rafael. He does not want Michael in their affairs.
Billy reports in to Michael and provides Rafael's wallet...there's a key sewn inside of it that looks shady.
Rogelio visits the Villanueva house (again) and tells Xo and Alba that he is providing them with hair and makeup for the Palomas. Xo admits it's time to let her dream go and when Jane comes home Xo drops hints that she read the story. They talk about the story and Jane's feelings about her mom's dating. Xo has tried to protect Jane by not dating seriously, but Jane wants her Mom to be happy. Jane wasn't too worried, no one would read the story- but Xiomara signed the consent form for her.
Flashback to Petra's younger days (five years ago), right after she broke things off with Milos. He had been waiting for her to walk by with acid in his hands to throw at her. She at the precise moment bent down to pick a coin up from the street missed his attack, which instead hit her mother. The acid spray disoriented her and she ended up getting run over by a car.
Jane and Rafael text about being a team for their peach, and going with Jane's plan to trust Michael. However, Michael is illegally searching Rafael's office with his brother. The key fits into a safe with money and passports and he vows to come back with a warrant.
Santos is about to reveal how to escape to Ivan- when Petra comes in and turns the TV off. By the time she turns it back on Santos has already escaped.
Jane enacts the plan to catch Petra while Michael and Rafael listen upstairs. Michael, being shady talks to Rafael while Jane tries to trap Petra- which fails. As they are talking Rafael walks out of the room and afterwards Jane asks where he went and Michael doesn't know. Michael tries to warn Jane about Rafael and that fails.
Back in the Penthouse, Rafael goes upstairs to do some research and her passport says that the story she told Jane was false.
The Paloma Awards are in full-swing and Best Actor Award goes to... Esteban. Rogelio has already stood up to accept his award and tries to cover his embarrassment.
At the part Jane and Rafael corner Petra and reveal that they hired a private investigator and that she is not the "real" Petra. Her name is really Natalia and Ivan sold her identity to Natalia so she could flee Milos. Rafael tells her to sign the divorce papers and leave the baby alone otherwise they will keep digging. Petra agrees.
Xiomara meets her idol Paulina Rubio!! Her idol! They talk about her ending singing career and Paulina tells her to follow her dreams and to stick with singing.
Rafael and Jane recap their chain of events, where Rafael insists they are better together. Jane argues that they are different and that might cause some issues, but Rafael is sure he is right. Jane clears them for kissing.
Downstairs, Jane tells her father she is sorry he didn't win and that she bet on him in the work pool. Rogelio, upon hearing this, is overjoyed. Xo comes inside, in tears- she has met Paulina Rubio and she told her to follow her dreams. Rogelio was behind the whole thing!! Paulina tells him that he is doing something nice must mean she is special.
Alba is angry with Petra and wishes she could give her a piece of her mind- she is drunk on champagne. Jane finally asks why Xo is not pursuing Rogelio and Jane tells her to go for it.
Michael and Nadine are in Rafael's office because an "employee" aka his brother, saw passports in Rafael's safe. Rafael opens it up for them and it is empty! Either he got played by Raf or his brother! They go back to the Serbian's room and Michael is freaking out. Nadine offers to have sex with him in the bathroom when she accidentally hits a switch that lifts the tub up off the floor- revealing a secret tunnel.
Alba makes her way up to Petra's room and demands to see Petra. Instead she hears Ivan's calls for help and an angry Magda. Alba runs away but then MAGDA PUSHES HER DOWN THE STAIRS! SHE CAN WALK!Starring
