Chapter Forty-Seven is the 3rd episode of Season 3 of Jane the Virgin.
Synopsis[]
DREAMS/GLORIA AND EMILIO ESTEFAN GUEST STAR – Jane (Gina Rodriguez) continues to work on her thesis and she decides to add Alba's estranged sister to the narrative, much to Alba's (Ivonne Coll) dismay. In order for Rogelio (Jaime Camil) to have a chance at being an American crossover star, he decides to bring the Passions of Santos to The CW in hopes they will pick it up. Xo (Andrea Navedo) thinks about abandoning her dream of being a singer for something more realistic. Meanwhile, Luisa (guest star Yara Martinez) is forced to make a choice between her family or Rose (guest star Bridget Regan).

At the end of last week’s episode, Jane and Michael were cleared for sex by Michael’s doctor. “Chapter 47” is all about them doing everything in their power to make it FINALLY happen, but problems keep arising, making one wonder, Are they going to make us, faithful viewers, continue to wait, too?! Fortunately, the wait didn’t last long, and Jane was a virgin no more, but her first time wasn’t exactly perfect, so she and Michael try new things to find their groove. In this fashion recap, we’re talking about clothes — and what it means when they come off. Jane interviews Alba to get some background and color on the book she’s writing about her grandparents’ love story. Through that process, Jane comes across a photo of Alba’s sister, Cecilia, and discovers that she looks exactly like her. Jane asks Alba why she never told her about that and why she never really speaks of her, and it turns out that Cecilia is the one who told Alba’s in-laws that she wasn’t a virgin, prompting the outburst at the wedding.
As Jane is trying to figure out Cecilia’s character, she gets in her own head and plays the part of “Bitchy Cecilia,” who is the extremely sassy, mean version of Alba’s sister — dressed in a hot, hot, hot halter with sexy, voluminous hair. Her fire is really turned up when we get to “Horny Cecilia” later on. When the moment finally arrives where Jane loses her virginity, it’s not this big ordeal. Rather, she and Michael want to just get to it, so it happens after everything on their to-do list is out of the way. Michael comes home to Jane, who had just been in a session with “Bitchy Cecilia,” and with it being sort of spur of the moment, Jane looks casual in a T-shirt and sweats, like she’s comfortable in her clothes and comfortable with her husband. Do you know who isn’t comfortable though? Jane, for another reason, because she faked her orgasm, and also Jane’s adviser Marlene, who sees Jane in and out of her casual clothes when Jane accidentally taped and sent she and Michael’s first go. Jane reveals that the video was of her first time, which Marlene says explains a lot, meaning that sex is what’s been missing from her romance novel.
Then there’s “Horny Cecilia,” who is all about sex. She pops up — like “Bitchy Cecilia,” in Jane’s imagination — wearing a hot pink, short nightgown with spaghetti straps and lace details. Va va voom! She encourages Jane to make things steamy, but like with “Bitchy Cecilia,” that doesn’t feel totally right for her book, nor is it right in real life. Jane is later seen in a nightgown of her own, and she’s brought some experience-enhancing lubricant to mix things up for her and Michael. The lubricant makes Jane burn in all the wrong places, effectively killing the moment. The moment was also killed earlier when Michael tried, let’s say, other things, but Jane was too in her head. Later, Jane approaches Michael for another go and says they should just focus on their love and stop being so in their heads, but Michael takes it the wrong way. Focusing on love sounds good in theory, but Michael takes it to mean that Jane has given up on the possibility of having an orgasm. That’s not what she meant at all, but the moment is once again gone.
She’d gotten that idea from “Nun Cecilia,” an older, conservative version of Alba’s sister — reformed after the wild days of her past, and completely covered up and dressed like a nun—who tells her that sex should be an intimate act shared by married people. That’s not totally the right version of Cecilia either, but eventually Jane does figure her out; in fact, she figured her out so well that Alba assumed that Jane read through her letters. The truth is Cecilia was a dynamic human being with lots of sides to her who was in love with Alba’s then to be, and that’s why she told. Another revelation? Jane is not totally okay with her losing her virginity because she feels like she lost part of her identity, but Xo tells her that really she’s gained a new part of her life and relationship and that she and Michael will find their rhythm in time. Find their rhythm they do when Jane comes to find Michael watching their accidental sex tape and studying what went right and what went wrong; so they try again, and this time it goes very, very right, as indicated in part by a cartoon of the pair traveling the world, and that cartoon is much bigger and more exciting than the cartoon that followed their first try.
Wait, there’s more, and from Xo and Rogelio. In an effort to bring The Passions of Santos to America, Rogelio takes a meeting with The CW — META ALERT — and the network greenlights the show, but they want to cast Rob Lowe as the lead. Rogelio thinks he can still claim the lead if he calls in a favor 20 years in the making, having Gloria and Emilio Estefan — GUEST STAR ALERT — be involved in the show. When Xo starts having doubts about pursuing singing, however, Rogelio asks that they come to see her perform instead to re-ignite her love of music. Xo totally looks the part of a performer with her gold, sparkly dress, but her heart just isn’t the way it used to be, so it looks like she’ll be making other moves.
Also important to this episode, Luisa comes home after being kidnapped by Rose and sees her murder list (which might not be totally accurate) — that’s basically the cherry on top, so she finally decides that she can’t be with her. It looks like Rose doesn’t take heartbreak so well, because next thing you know, Rafael’s mother Elena is seemingly dying in her prison cell, pushing what looks to be a very important Bible out for her son. - Cecilia, Alba's sister, was the one who told Mateo's family that Alba was not at the wedding, causing the scene that made them run away together. Alba doesn't know why Cecilia did it.
- Actually, she does. Jane happens to guess it in her fictionalised version and Alba is outraged: it turns out Cecilia was in love with Mateo too.
- Alba keeps letters from Cecilia in her closet.
- When Rogelio realised he still loved Xo, he broke up with Dina... via tweet!!
