Petra – Thank you for letting me stay
Jane – That’s what are sisters for
―Jane and Petra to each other[src]

Jane & Petra is a relationship on Jane the Virgin, portrayed by Gina Rodriguez and Yael Grobglas.

About[]

Petra and Jane start out as friendly until Jane realizes what kind of person Petra really is; cheating on her husband, making nice with Jane to secure a future with Rafael. Once Rafael and Jane become a couple, Petra and Jane are rivals (in Petra's mind, as Rafael has no interest in her), albeit with sobering moments like when Jane comforts a distraught Petra in Chapter Twelve.

Petra and Jane slowly move toward a friendship after Petra's self-insemination and subsequent pregnancy give the pair something real in common. They are seen having grown closer and consider each other as family following the three year time-skip, and started help each other out more, sometimes openly and sometimes discreetly. Currently, they have a very close friendship and consider each other as sisters.

Story[]

Rivalry[]

Jane and Petra find out about each other when Jane is accidentally inseminated with Petra's husband's sperm. It's assumed that Petra doesn't like Jane since she was inseminated instead of Petra. Jane and Petra meet at the hospital when Jane has her first sonogram. Petra hugs Jane and starts to kiss up to her so Jane will give Petra the baby.[1] Jane thinks that Petra is nice and a good person, until Rafael finds out that Petra is cheating on him and tells Jane, which alters Jane's perception of Petra.[2] The two women become rivals when Petra, desperate to force Rafael into giving her more money, tries to make a play on the baby's custody.[3]

Petra opens up to Jane about her past in Chapter Twelve

Petra invades Jane's appointment with the doctor and insinuates she'll go to court to have the baby since she's still married to Rafael and they allegedly drew up a contract about using a surrogate to have a baby. Rafael decides to hire a PI and finds that Petra isn't who she claims to be, and Petra finally backs off and leaves the couple be.[3] Jane comforts Petra after walking in on her crying due to her ex-boyfriend Miloš returning and telling Petra her mother's not who Petra believes she is. Petra at first rebuffs Jane's attempts to comfort her, but eventually gives in and tells Jane everything about her life so far.[4]

Moving forward, the two have little interaction but are not fighting until Miloš buys Petra a third of The Marbella and Petra uses her leverage to hurt Rafael, who's just lost his father.[5][6] After several traumatic experiences, Petra invites her mother, Magda back into her life.[7] However, when Jane's grandmother, Alba remembers that Magda was the one who pushed her down the stairs, Jane is livid and insists that Rafael force Petra and Magda out of the hotel by any means necessary. The two have many face-offs, and Jane's malice towards Petra grows. Rafael begins flirting with Petra in order to get her to turn in her mother to the police.[8]

After Petra finds out that Rafael only pretended to have feelings for her, in order to get Magda jailed for Jane, Petra considers finally moving on but is swayed by Luisa not to. Thinking she still has a chance with Rafael, she self-inseminates herself and becomes pregnant.[9] Jane is horrified when she learns of the pregnancy but tells Rafael they should try to make it works since she wants Mateo to know his sibling.[10] Petra soon discovers that Jane and Rafael broke up only for Rafael to tell her in clear terms that they will never be together.[11]

Petra is full of regret, pregnant and, when Milos returns to claim his price for buying Petra into The Marbella she is forced to accept to marry him, which turns out to be tax cover by marriage. Jane gets worried she's being forced into it and tries to find out what he has over her, remembering their previous conversation and how scared she seemed of him. Jane tried to help her get out of it and for the first time admitted she did care about her a bit. In the end, Petra felt forced to go through with it anyways and Jane helps her get ready for the wedding.[12]

After realizing she's having twins, Petra asks Jane to help get Magda released from prison early so Petra has some support in her life. Jane agrees and when the two randomly run into each other at The Marbella, they bond bit by bit over motherhood as Jane reassures Petra she's going to be okay. Jane invites Petra to stay for Thanksgiving at the Villanueva house,[13] which leaves Petra wanting a friendship with Jane and she calls Jane to ask her to lunch. Magda's murdering Ivan Rogachevsky gets in the way as she enlists Petra to help bury the body and Petra fakes malice towards Jane in order to derail any suspicion of Magda's criminal activities.[14]

Since Miloš has been imprisoned in Prague, thanks to Magda and Petra's co-operation with the police, Rafael is the person who supports Petra during her pregnancy, and he asks Jane is she will help Petra pick out baby gear, which Jane agrees to, ending up offering to throw Petra's baby shower. The baby research doesn't go well as the two women have very different views on cost and value, leading them to fight. Jane still throws Petra the baby shower, trying to be nice, but Petra is in a late pregnancy no-bull zone. She calls Jane out, saying she'd rather Jane be honest and they finally discover something they have in common.[15]

This truce continues and the two spend time together and Petra even tries to help Jane get back at Angelique Harper for plagiarizing her, resulting in Jane being present when Petra's water breaks and taking her to the hospital. As Rafael is stuck in traffic, Jane stays to support Petra and ends up helping her deliver the twins and Petra thanks her for being there.[16]

Jane worried when Petra immediately returns to work, and took her to a mommy class to help her. When she started talking about her struggle to connect with her daughters, the class worried she might suffer from postpartum depression which she didn't take well. Jane, feeling concerned, gives Petra the number of a doctor from one of the other moms, who dealt with postpartum and Petra talks to the psychologist.[17] When Rafael confines in Petra about not feeling comfortable with Jane moving to a place thirty minutes away with Mateo, she comes to her defenses, telling him get over himself and not get in the way of Jane having her dream-house after everything she's done. When they want to find a closer house anyways, Petra buys the house in secret and pays the difference in rent so they can afford it.[17]

Petra hosts a Mother's Day brunch so Rafael won't have to split his time, and invites Jane and her family who reluctantly agrees. Jane finds out Petra's sister Anežka has been sabotaging for her. She tells Petra who confronts Anežka and says Jane is her friend but Anezka says she's not a good friend, as she heard her saying Petra wasn't good mother. Despite Jane explaining that wasn't what she said, Petra got upset and stuck up for Anežka. They tried to put their differences aside for the lunch but things got heated when Jane started accusing Anežka of lying and she had a seizure. At the hospital, Anezka confessed which caused Jane to turn on Petra when she said Petra didn't have to lie for her anymore, uncovering that she knew the entire time.[18] Later, Petra RSVP'd no to Jane and Michael's wedding and Jane confronted her. Petra apologized and explained she was just feeling a bit inadequate and didn't want Jane to always be right. To make things better she proposed transferring her sister from the restaurant to housekeeping and agreed to come to the wedding.[19]

Jane and Petra got into a dispute over how Rafael should handle a situation in which he was being blackmailed by his brother. Petra goes to apologize to Jane for her behavior but gets upset when Jane criticizes her methods and basically implies she's a better person then her.[19] After Petra is put in paralysis and Anežka takes her place pretending to be her, Jane goes to her for a favor but when she brings up their disagreement and Anežka has no idea what she's talking about she tells Jane that they should stay clear of each other and that she's never liked her. An upset Jane tells her she's done trying with her. However, Jane later found out that Petra was the one who had secretly been paying half of her rent. Jane tells "Petra" she can't let her keep doing that but is touched by the gesture. Although, later their fight escalated as a pressured Anežka pushed Jane into the pool who then told her this was the final straw and they were out of each other's lives. However, Jane soon gets the suspicion that "Petra" isn't really Petra.[20]

Family[]

When Rafael went to prison, Petra was worried about taking care of the twins alone and scared that she would ruin them[21]. Jane assured her she wouldn't and came up with the idea of meeting once a week with the kids to check up on each other; Saturdays for brunch. Which was a tradition they kept throughout the coming years. They had grown to rely on each other and become close as a family although their rivalry sometimes remained it was more about their roles as parents and different views rather than their previous romantic rivalry.[22] This came to a head when both Jane and Petra signed up for room mom at their kids' school. When they couldn't agree on how to do things together they requested a election to decide. However, they both realized they didn't actually want to do it and gave up the spot for each other. They both admitted they only did it because they were insecure about being a good parent and wanted to end their rivalry about parenting.[21]

Petra sought Jane's advice when Rafael wanted to get back together with her even though she didn't want to get involved as like Petra said, Jane was her only real friend. She initially adviced her against it but later urged her to go for it.[23] However, Petra got insecure about Rafael choosing Jane over her again and was sure Jane still had feelings for him, which turned out to be true.[24] When Jane and Rafael hear that Petra has been in an accident involving her sister they rush over and Jane is relieved when she's alright. She tries to smooth things over between Petra and Rafael and they end up giving their relationship a go.[25] However, Petra soon breaks it off[26] which also helps improve Petra and Jane relationship.[27]

When Petra and Rafael fall out, Petra tries to get Jane to help her convince him to come to brunch but is upset when she suggest they should cancel it for now. To make things right between them she takes brunch over to Jane's place and admits she needs the two of them to be okay because Jane's like her moral compass and if she's not okay with her she knows she needs to do better.[28]

Jane and Petra tell each other they love each other

When Jane's mother Xiomara was diagnosed with cancer, Petra brought Jane comfort-food in support although through a misunderstanding where Rafael overheard Petra practicing asking "Jane" out he believed she had romantic feelings for her. As it turned out she was taking about another Jane: Jane Ramos (JR for short) and made it clear that although she cared about her and would be there if she needed anything, she had no romantic interest in Jane.[29] When Rafael and Jane are introduced to JR, Jane gets upset when she doesn't like her. When Petra confronts her about needing everybody to love her Jane makes it clear that's not actually what this is about and tells Petra that she loves her. Petra reluctantly reciprocated and Jane gives her a hug.[30]

After Michael returns from being believed as dead, Petra feels left out when Jane doesn't talk to her about it. They are forced together when attempting to solve the constant fighting between the twins and Mateo and Jane confronts Petra about her behavior. She admits how she's feeling and Jane apologizes also saying she views Petra as a sister, a sentiment that Petra shares.[31] Petra starts bombarding Jane with texts to help her win back her ex-girlfriend. They get drunk together, with Jane helping Petra write a romantic text and Petra urging Jane to mail the divorce-papers.[32] Petra gets upset with Jane when she didn't take her advice and tried to rekindle things with Michael, resulting in her breaking Rafael's heart. However, Jane tells her she needs to get over herself and support her regardless of if she understands her or not. Petra admits she's right and they should support each other no matter what.[33]

When JR breaks up with Petra and she's left heartbroken, Jane's the first person she comes to. Jane lets her stay over and becomes her shoulder to cry on.[34][35] As Jane struggles with getting Rafael back and Petra is still not over JR they confine in each other.[36] Later, Jane asks Petra to be her maid of honor at her wedding to Rafael although Jane agrees to instead let her be by Rafael's side as he has no other family left.[37] When Petra's mother is put on life support she confines in Jane that she feels nothing for her, Jane tells her she doesn't have to cry for her mother but can be sad for herself instead because she deserved better.[38] Petra makes an emotional speech at Jane and Rafael's wedding, wishing them all the happiness in the world and saying she loves them.[39]
